Since its inception, REAL has conducted extensive resilience research, resulting in the publication of many reports and learning products. Through the Dashboard project, REAL sought to develop a synthesis of both quantitative and qualitative evidence from several of these products into an accessible and practical format for all audiences. REAL worked with the Institute for Development Impact to create this data visualization tool to help measure and analyze the results of resilience-strengthening interventions and humanitarian assistance provided to households in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Niger, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Nepal.
The dashboard begins with details about the seven program sources of evidence: ENSURE, RISE, PRIME, EREGS, Amalima, M-RED II, and PREG. Then users can use an interactive map to explore metrics related to shocks and stresses, resilience capacities, coping strategies, and food security. Users can click on individual countries to view additional details on specific resilience indicators to learn more about specific countries. To read more about these indicators, their definitions, and methods, users can consult the Methodological Guide for Calculating Resilience Capacity.
The dashboard details which resilience capacities are critical for effective coping, including asset ownership, timely access to financial services, formal and informal safety nets, and fostering stronger social capital. Then, the dashboard links resilience capacities to specific programs with an interactive Sankey chart.
The dashboard also details the key factors of humanitarian assistance for effective resilience-focused programming, including timing, consideration of social norms, and conflict. Then, the dashboard links the most common forms of humanitarian assistance to each program in an interactive Sankey chart.
The final section of the dashboard highlights the key takeaways from resilience programming and research. These takeaways are organized into the categories of what works in resilience programming, what to consider when designing resilience programming, and MEL and adaptive management for resilience programming.
