REAL Award
Providing Evaluation, Analysis and Learning Support
The REAL Award is a resilience-focused, consortium-led effort providing rigorous, yet practical, monitoring, evaluation, strategic analysis and capacity-building support.
Activity Term: Sept. 1, 2020-Aug. 31, 2025
The Resilience Evaluation, Analysis and Learning (REAL) Award is a consortium-led effort funded by the USAID Center for Resilience in the Bureau for Resilience, Environment and Food Security. Through a broad range of activities, REAL responds to emerging resilience needs among the implementer and donor community. From technical guidance notes to evaluative research reports and practitioner-focused, capacity-strengthening activities, REAL promotes best practices in resilience program design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and learning.
Led by Save the Children, REAL draws on the technical expertise of consortium partners TANGO International and Mercy Corps to generate high-quality evidence on the effectiveness of USAID resilience investments and provide critical thought leadership and demand-driven technical support to a range of practitioners involved in monitoring, evaluating and learning from resilience programming. This is achieved through three strategic and interrelated purposes:
-
Lead and support demand-driven resilience evidence generation and research.
-
Provide evidence-based thought leadership, analysis and technical guidance in frontier resilience issues.
-
Co-create and facilitate the use of resilience knowledge to improve the design and adaptive management of resilience investments.
Responding to stakeholders’ priority knowledge needs, REAL partners generate evidence on resilience programming. REAL carries out mixed-methods evaluations, recurrent monitoring surveys and targeted research to further our understanding of contributors to resilience and support USAID counterparts seeking to integrate resilience measurement principles into Mission monitoring and evaluation systems. This evidence has also been organized into an interactive dashboard.
REAL supports capacity strengthening through the co-creation of tailored resilience measurement plans, dissemination of practical technical guidance and continued thought leadership in frontier areas of resilience analysis and programming.
REAL provides demand-driven support for the socialization and application of resilience knowledge to enable the adaptive management of USAID resilience investments. REAL consults regularly with a diverse range of practitioners and decision-makers to adapt knowledge products to their specific analysis and learning needs.
